Book Review: March 2025

What was I even doing in March that I didn't read very much? 2 memoirs and a health book. I need some fiction, I need to giggle. Please send me your suggestions.

“Fast Like a Girl” by Dr. Mindy Pelz

4 stars

This is a total nerdy science / health coach / I'm about to enter perimenopause book. It answered questions like "should I fast on my period?" and "what should I eat when I end a fast?" Despite doing intermittent fasting (or time restricted eating) on and off for about 3 years, I was following a lot of protocols based on research done by and on men. Women are not small men! Our biology makes us unique and our nutrition and movement needs to address this. This is of high interest to me, especially as I get older and my hormones change. So if you're into this sort of thing, let's connect on the topic!More information about Dr. Pelz can be found on her website and very active YouTube channel.

“How to Live Free in a Dangerous World” by Shayla Lawson

4 stars

A book about travel not written by a white guy. So many of us love to travel but we don’t fit into the definition of “backpacker.” Shayla’s experiences illuminate the human condition and how wherever we go, we are still present with ourselves. Friendship, marriage, race, sexuality and class are all explored in great detail with straightforward prose. This book had me looking forward to coming out of my winter hibernation and get traveling again.

“Women we Buried, Women we Burned” by Rachel Louise Snyder

4 stars

A memoir about a cult (yup, still fascinating to me) and whewwww was it intense. The 1st half of the book especially, has so much pain and struggle that I had to take a break for a few days. What I really loved about the book was the profound impact travel and writing had on the author. These things have deeply impacted me as well. What resiliency Rachel has, to bounce back again and again even in the face of adversity.
